The Canary in the Coal Mine

Our springs need our help. The health of our springs reflects the health of our aquifer. Our springs flow as our wells produce. Our springs dry up as our wells dry up. To ensure sustainable availability of water for all stakeholders in Kinney County, the aquifer must be sustainably managed. Currently this is not the case. More can be done and more must be done. In “Springs of Texas” by Gunnar Brune, Las Moras Springs is listed as having an average annual discharge of 21.9 cubic feet per second, as calculated from discharge records since 1896. This year already, the discharge was 0 cubic feet per second for 119 days until the rain event of late July. The blessing of rain is graciously accepted. The curse of drought must be sustainably managed.
